March 6th Weekend Traffic Advisory

On or about March 6, 2016, eastbound 53rd Street, between Broadway and Avenue E, will be reopened. Normal two-way traffic will resume going in and out of Bayonne. Access to the Toll Plaza will be restored via the new roundabout south of 52nd Street. Motorists can follow the new roundabout to the Toll Plaza or continue south on Avenue E. 

E. 52nd Street

  • Access to E. 52nd Street will only be available via southbound Avenue E.

E. 51st Street

  • E. 51st Street will be a right turn only onto southbound Avenue E. Direct access to northbound Avenue E and the Toll Plaza from E. 51st Street will no longer be available. 

E. 50th Street

  • The last turn for motorists on northbound Avenue E will be at E. 50th Street.

This past Thursday and Friday, Feb. 18/19th, public outreach efforts began to disseminate information about the forthcoming traffic shift which will be fully implemented on or about March 6, 2016. A new pamphlet began circulation around Bayonne residents and businesses in the project vicinity, including several extra copies placed at Value City Furniture and QuickChek on E. 53rd Street. 2/26-2/28: Traffic Advisory

During the weekend of 02/26/16 through 02/28/16, westbound 53rd Street will be closed at Avenue E, 8:00PM Friday to 4:00PM Sunday, for roadway construction. All westbound 53rd Street traffic will be diverted to 52nd Street. All E 53rd Street businesses, including Value City Furniture and QuickChek, will remain open during this period with access provided via Broadway from 52nd Street.  This work will be supported by Bayonne Police.

01/08/16: Construction Update

*WEEKEND ADVISORY* During the weekend of 01/08/16 thru 01/10/16, northbound Avenue E, between 52nd Street and the Toll Plaza, will be reduced to a single lane of traffic, 8:00PM Friday to 10:00PM Sunday, for paving operations.  Work will be supported by Bayonne Police.
The following work is scheduled over the next three weeks:
 
Toll Plaza
  • East side (entering 14A): renovation of existing Toll Utility Building will continue.
  •  Construction continues on the new east Toll Lane.
  • Eastbound E 53rd Street is closed to through traffic at Avenue E (Toll Plaza) effective 11/09/15.  Drivers wishing to access the Toll Plaza must go down another eastbound street to Avenue E (51st, 49th, etc.) Access to local businesses (QuickChek, Value City, etc.) on E 53rd Street is maintained.  Westbound 53rd Street from the Toll Plaza to Broadway will not change.  The Eastbound closure is expected to be in place for six (6) months.  This is a major traffic change.
  • Traffic from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard and Route 440 has been shifted left (east), onto the existing (one-way) bridge in a two-way pattern.  This is a major traffic shift.

Ramps between the Toll Plaza and the Hudson County Extension (HCE)
  • Widening construction continues on the ramps to and from the west bound HCE.
  • Retaining wall construction along Frontage Road continues. This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.
  • Local street level work at Garfield, Avenue C and JFK Boulevard bridges continues. This work will also be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.
  • Proposed Sign Structure Locations adjacent to the corner of Avenue B / E58th Street Corner, corner of Avenue C Structure and Garfield Avenue Structure (PSE&G Sub-Station), Toll Plaza Parking Area will be constructed. When needed, Bayonne PD or Jersey City PD will be asked to support this effort.
  • Work continues on a VMS Sign Structure under the Turnpike Bridge over Route 440, near the Newark Bay. Access is being provided from Route 440.
Avenue E / Proposed Roundabout
  • Water main work on Avenue E between E50th Street and E51st Street will continue.  Daily traffic detours will be utilized, 8:00AM to 3:30PM, to facilitate this work. This work will be supported by Bayonne Police.
  • Deep foundation work on new bridge piers will continue. This work will be performed in dedicated work zones.
  • Northbound Avenue E traffic has been shifted to a new alignment, east of the Connector Bridge, between E50th Street and the Toll Plaza.  The left turn at 53rdStreet is no longer available.  Traffic from Port Jersey Boulevard to the Turnpike cannot make a right turn onto the service road at 53rd Street. THIS IS A MAJOR TRAFFIC SHIFT. CLICK HERE FOR PAMPHLET.
  • Bridge pier construction will begin in dedicated work zones.  Periodic closures of E52nd Street will be utilized.  This work will be supported by Bayonne Police.
Connector Bridge (Bridge from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard)
  • A two-way traffic pattern has been implemented on the bridge ramp from Port Jersey Boulevard to the Toll Plaza.
  • Pedestrian usage of the bridge for access to and from Port Jersey Boulevard continues to be prohibited. Please CLICK HERE for shuttle bus pamphlet.
Route 440 and Pulaski Street Intersection / Jughandle
  • The southbound Route 440 Jughandle at Pulaski Street has been reduced to a single lane. Deep sewer construction continues.
  • Utility relocation work will continue on Pulaski Street at Route 440. This work will be supported by Bayonne and Jersey City Police.
Ramp Area East of Route 440
  • Ground improvement work in advance of new ramp construction continues.
  • Deep sewer relocation work will continue.

12/10/15: Traffic Advisory

This Thursday evening, December 10th, Garfield Avenue will be closed between 55th Street in Bayonne and Merritt Street in Jersey City  between the hours of 8:00PM to 5:00AM for bridge beam erection.  Traffic will be diverted to Avenue C.  This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police.

Other Upcoming NJTA Work

Beginning 11/20/2015, no weekend long closures are currently scheduled for the mainline Newark Bay Hudson County Extension for the remainder of 2015.

Motorists can call 511 from any phone (Listen for the initial voice prompt and ask for traffic conditions. Motorists can ask for a specific Highway, City, or even a point of interest. Residents of Newark / Essex County and Kearny / Hudson County can monitor traffic conditions by accessing Turnpike webcams at http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/cameras-and-signs.html, and http://www.511nj.org/cameras.aspx.

Alternate Directions to Cruise Terminal

From the North and South:
Take the New Jersey Turnpike/I-95 to Exit 14A – Bayonne. Stay left approaching the Toll Plaza. Follow directions below.
From Exit 14A:
·         Route 440
After you come through the Toll Plaza, stay left and follow the signs for Route 440 South. Proceed 1 1/2 miles and make a left into the Bayonne Ocean Terminal. The cruise terminal is two miles straight ahead.
From Within Bayonne:
 
·         Avenue E
Follow Avenue E Southbound to East 40th Street and turn left. Then turn right onto Chosin Few Way. Then go left onto Goldsborough Drive.
·         E. 53rd Street
Take East 53rd Street to Broadway. Take Broadway South to East 30th Street, turn left. Take East 30th Street to the end and go left onto Route 440 North. Go right onto Port Terminal Boulevard, which becomes Goldsborough Drive.
·         Broadway
Take Broadway South to East 30th Street, turn left. Take East 30th Street to the end and go left onto Route 440 North. Go right onto Port Terminal Boulevard, which becomes Goldsborough Drive.

11/13-11/15: Traffic Advisory

Bridge demolition work will occur at 51st Street and Avenue E from 8:00PM Friday, 11/13/15 to 6:00PM Sunday, 11/15/15.
During this period, Northbound Avenue E traffic will be maintained on a temporary alignment between E50th Street and E51st Street and Southbound Avenue E traffic will be diverted to E52nd Street.
E51st Street will be closed to through traffic and local residents will be able to exit onto Avenue E southbound only.
